You hear the term targeted traffic quite a bit when it comes to internet marketing, but today I want to talk about free targeted traffic and how it can be extremely beneficial to your website.

If you are unaware, targeted traffic is where you find users that would be interested in the topic of your website and you lure them in with various techniques. I want to discuss five of these methods that will help you not only find a targeted user base, but ensure they continue to return in the future.

Before I begin with my own top five ways of attaining targeted traffic it should be understood that you are running a website or a blog that is updated at least daily.

Internet surfers like new and fresh content, and it will be easier to attain a large readership if you are actively posting on your website each and every day, even the weekend. I also assume that you have already done your due diligence when it comes to market research.

Without a doubt, it is going to be extremely hard to find free targeted traffic if you do not know who your audience is.

1. Related Message Boards

By far the easiest way to find targeted traffic is to head out on the web and find several high activity forums that are related to your website. If possible you will want to find five or six bustling boards to post on. Once you begin posting you will want to include your website in the sig line of your posts.

If you are posting on a board that is full of activity (i.e. threads being made constantly, posts being answered quickly, etc.) then you are going to be very surprised with the amount of traffic you are going to get.

By taking part in the community, answering other posters questions, and creating quality threads you will soon be accepted into the community and 30  to 50 visits a day from each forum will be commonplace as you grow your reputation.

From a numbers game perspective, those kind of numbers multiplied by five forums would give you an average 150+ visitors a day, ones that are already interested in the topic of your website.

2. Video Marketing

There is a lot written about article marketing, and it is also a great technique that I cover below, but one thing many marketers do not take advantage of is video.

There are countless ways for you to market with video, and just one of them is creating a video podcast. You don’t even need to write fresh material, as you can just turn your already written articles into videos. Camera shy?

No worries, as you can easily create a slideshow video with pictures and narration. Submit your video to the most popular video networks like Revver, Vimeo, Youtube, Myspace Video, etc and you can quickly get some serious traffic over a short period of time.

The key to getting traffic from these sources is by properly naming your video and getting your tags right. If your video is about making money online, don’t put dog training tips in the tag section.

YouTube is the second most used search engine on the planet, and you would be crazy to not utilize it to get free targeted traffic.

3. Article Marketing

This is a tried and true method and has worked consistently for the last several years. The key to success is volume and proper keyword research.

You want to have your articles all over the web, in hundreds of directories. That can take time, but you will quickly find out that it is definitely worth it.

The amount of traffic these article directories can and will send is nothing short of amazing,
meaning that if you are not taking advantage of this excellent free source of traffic you are crazy!

By doing correct keyword research you are going to benefit from far better search engine placement than would if you just started posting articles without much thought behind them.

Article marketing is one of the easiest ways to find targeted traffic.

However if you don’t want to do keyword research, you can still see some success with article marketing by utilizing sites like HubPages and Squidoo. You see these web 2.0 sites have very large communities behind them and because of that you will see that you will get a ton of traffic from these sites themselves rather than from the search engines.

This means that you could write more articles based on your interests, and point them to your related website without having to worry about doing keyword research.

4. Facebook FanPages

Are you using Facebook fanpages to increase targeted traffic to your website? If you are not you are missing a golden opportunity to really find people who are interested in the topic of your website. Once you get your fanpage to go viral (friends recommending friends) you will see a huge increase in traffic to your website as long as you promote it on your fanpage.

This means that you should be promoting any new posts you make to your blog, and anything that you would consider newsworthy.

Facebook is an excellent tool that you can even use to promote affiliate products, and it is something that you should be taking notice of as it continues to grow into the worlds most used website, currently standing at 500 million users with no signs of slowing down.

5. Free Classified Ads

They sometimes get a bad rap for the amount of junk that usually exists in Classified Ads sections on many websites.

Generally if you are advertising a money making info website it is best to stay away from these. But if you are in any other niche there is really no reason not to use free classifieds sites to generate targeted traffic.

For example if you ran a blog on weight loss through yoga there would be no reason for you not to take advantage of these free advertising platforms.

It is quite amazing how many clicks you will get daily, because if people are really interested in a problem and you have the solution there is no reason they won’t come take a peek at what you have to offer. It will then be up to your sales ability to close the deal.

There are countless other ways to find traffic for your website, but these really are some of the best techniques to utilize to find free targeted traffic that will convert for you.
